I was over at Fordham and Wakefield a couple of weeks back and Antony said that he had a brand new Lee wulff line that I should try.
Being a fan of Royal Wulff lines anyway ( Bermuda shorts are my go to salt water line), I jumped at the chance. The first one I got was a 5 wt which is a half size heavier, similar to what Rio do. It has a 30 ‘ head with a nice triangular taper for roll casting and its textured. This I found quite strange to start with as its noisey when shooting line but I have now got use to it and don’t notice it.
I paired the line to my 9′ Sage one 5 wt which loves a heavier line anyway and wow it loaded the rod perfectly. Tight loops were instantly obtainable and with out trying I was shooting out the whole line. Apparently the texture of the line helps the line shoot!
The line is 2 tone which is great for seeing the head for loading the rod and a nice touch is there is about 3′ of buckskin colour at the end of the front taper, which will help with bite detection when nymphing and will be a bit more subtle when dry flyfishing.
I decided to buy the 7 wt version for my 10′ 7 wt Sage one, reservoir rod and took myself off to Grafham. It was a miserable day but once again the line performed fantastically well casting distance easily but what I wasn’t expecting was when the line was wet and in the rain the line felt grippy when hauling with the slight texture which I feel will be a benefit especially with cold and wet hands.
This will definitely be my go to line for all my Sage rods that like a bit of overloading and all my bank fishing, but as with the old triangular tapper lines roll very nicely as well so ideal for boat/ loch style as well.
